Solander
HD, 8mm, 16mm, and archival material
Solander is a four channel film installation that addresses the pervasive
nature of history and place in family. The starting piont was my grandfather's
family history, which chronicles his trip from Russia to the Lower East
Side of New York. I went back to the apartment where he had first landed
and found a block of projects. I interviewed members of the community that
currently live on Gouverneur St. A pleasant day was spent playing dice,
selling cigarettes and drinking rum with old men and eating chicken and
playing bingo with old women. These interviews combined with archival sound
and images, as well as recreated material make up Solander.
The piece is projected on a mirrored vanity which mimics the shape of Gouverneur's projects.
